Gratuity questions

How is end-of-service gratuity calculated in the UAE?

Under Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021 (Article 51), an employee in the private sector earns 21 days of basic wage for each of the first five years of service and 30 days for each year after that. Part years count in proportion.

A day of wage is the last basic monthly salary divided by 30, so a basic salary of AED 10,000 is AED 333.33 a day. Allowances are not part of the basic wage.

Do I get gratuity if I resign or have worked less than five years?

Yes, as long as you have completed at least one year of continuous service. Under the 2021 law, resigning does not reduce your gratuity; the previous law reduced it for early resignations.

With less than one full year of service there is no gratuity.

Is there a maximum, and which salary counts?

Gratuity is calculated on your last basic wage, without allowances such as housing or transport. The total can’t exceed two years’ wage.

This calculator uses 24 times your total monthly wage when you enter it, and 24 times your basic wage when you don’t, which is the more cautious figure. Days of unpaid absence are not counted as service.

Does this apply to free zones, part-time work or dismissal?

The calculator estimates full-time private-sector employment on the UAE mainland. Some free zones, such as DIFC and ADGM, have their own end-of-service rules, and part-time, fixed-term or special cases, including some dismissals, can change the amount.

It is an estimate, not legal advice. Check your contract, or ask MOHRE or your employer for the final figure.

This calculator gives an estimate for full-time private-sector employees on the UAE mainland, based on Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021. It is not legal advice. Your contract, your free zone’s rules, your employer and MOHRE decide what you are actually owed.
